The PH Grand Piano - An Exclusive Blüthner Grand Piano and Scandinavian Design Classic
Poul Henningsen is famous for his lighting designs, including the PH Lamps and Artichoke Lamps which have become Scandinavian Design classics. Poul Henningsen was also a prolific designer of furniture from the 1920s onwards and when Poul Henningsen created the PH Grand Piano in 1930, he challenged the concept of how a grand piano should appear. Poul Henningsen observed that the wooden cases of traditional grand pianos restricted the sound and vision of the piano as an instrument and that traditional wooden cased grand pianos were effectively instruments being played ‘inside a box’. By removing the traditional wooden casing of a standard grand piano and replacing it with a case made from celluloid and the lightest of metal frames finished in soft leather, PH created an exclusive grand piano that is unique in its delicate and refined appearance. With the design for the PH Grand Piano, Poul Henningsen released the piano from the shrouds of its outer wooden case to reveal the beauty of the instrument inside.
