The Chopin Project (part 2 of 2)

Official trailer for The Chopin Project

This second installment of the Chopin Project includes six more pieces, performed by six excellent pianists.

The Chopin Etudes are considered to be vitally important pieces for talented pianists to study: they are short, complex musical studies that encapsulate a mood or idea. Most pianists consider these pieces essential repertoire, both for training themselves and as an excellent source of concert repertoire.

We partnered with the piano department at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen to present twelve different Chopin pieces, with the goal of showcasing the capabilities of the newly released instruments at PH Pianos.

Amazing Instruments and Art Pieces

The two instruments, designed by Poul Henningsen in the 1930s, are today produced exclusively by PH Pianos under worldwide exclusive license.

While their amazing case designs are the first thing to notice about PH Pianos, we have striven to deliver instruments that can really play at the highest level. We have crafted them from the best materials and they have been built here in Europe by our artisan builders.

Their strong Danish design legacy, coupled with our innovative and highest-quality workmanship, lets us announce that these instruments are incredible investment pieces, now and for the future.

F. Chopin: Etude in A minor, Op. 10 No. 2 “Chromatic”

This concert etude by Frederic Chopin transforms chromatic scale passages into a swirling, energetic atmosphere.

Its shimmering character comes from the perpetual motion of the right hand scale passages. The great challenge of the piece is that difficult chromatic passages are played-quickly- with one part of the right hand while other fingers of the right hand play chords that underpin the brilliant top line.

Chopin’s “chromatic” piano etude is skillfully played in this live performance by Xingying Chen, filmed at the PH Pianos showroom in Copenhagen.

F. Chopin: Etude in C Minor, Op. 25, No. 12 “Ocean”

The “Ocean” etude by Frederic Chopin is a piano piece which captivates listeners with a tidal quality in its musical phrasings.

Arpeggios up and down the piano remind the listener of waves, and the technical requirements of traveling up and down the piano are matched with equally important emotional outpouring.

It’s a tragic, dramatic piece with almost unbounded energy, and even in the beauty of the lines, Chopin captures an almost chaotic quality in the piece.

Pianist Dominik Wizjan performs on the PH Grand Piano in a top-notch, sparkling live performance of this highly virtuosic piece.

F. Chopin: Etude in B Minor, Op. 25 No. 10 “Octaves”

Marco Pomelli skillfully draws impressive contrasts from the piano in this recording of the “Octaves” study, the well-known concert etude by Frederic Chopin.

In this live recording, filmed at Copenhagen’s PH Pianos showroom, the musical expression is well-balanced by the pianist’s confident presentation of the piece.

Pomelli’s commanding opening and closing sections frame a truly warm and tender middle section, transporting the listener through a wide sonic landscape. Chopin’s masterful composition is faithfully and convincingly delivered by Pomelli in this beautiful performance on the PH Bow Grand Piano.

F. Chopin: Etude in F Major, Op. 10 No. 8

Nicolai Kanha’s rendition of this cheerful etude by Frederic Chopin disguises the difficulty of Chopin’s writing—it is a highly virtuosic piece which requires flexibility and accuracy, and the pianist must confidently create long musical lines while constantly traversing the keyboard.

The piece shifts between moods, at first buoyant and optimistic, and then turbulent before emerging in a bright and joyful finish.

Kanha’s effortlessly effervescent playing captures the character of this piece on the PH Grand Piano, in this live performance from Copenhagen’s PH Pianos showroom.

F. Chopin: Etude in C Minor, Op. 10 No. 12 “Revolutionary”

The “Revolutionary” etude by Frederic Chopin is one of the most recognizable pieces by this renowned composer, and Ruben Høgh’s live performance confidently captures the character of the piece.

Høgh successfully navigates the challenge of balancing the relentlessly moving left hand with the lamenting and fiery right-hand melody, as the piece sweeps through many tonalities before closing in an explosive burst of strong chords.

This is a statement piece- and it is convincingly delivered by Høgh on the PH Grand Piano. Is is presented as part of PH Pianos’ large-scale Chopin Project.

F. Chopin: Etude in E Major, Op. 10 No. 3

This melodic and serene piano piece, performed by Lana Suran, is one of the most beloved melodies written by Frederic Chopin. In the piece, the peaceful and chordal outer sections frame the central climactic section.

Suran creates a lovely contrast between the gentle opening and the fiery, dancelike material that forms the central section.

The piece requires strong musical and technical skill, and Suran beautifully delivers in this live performance on the PH Grand Piano in Copenhagen.
